Every other page on this site ranks lights on performance. This one does not, because emergency lighting has a different failure mode. The light that fails you in an outage is not the dim one — it is the flat one, or the one you could not find.

So this ranking starts from shelf life and findability, and treats output as a tiebreaker.

How we picked

Power-source shelf life first, then beam shape for indoor use, then whether the light can be located in the dark. Every figure is sourced and several products here publish almost nothing, which we say plainly. See our methodology.

That table explains the whole ranking. The Energizer socket light leads because it is charging continuously and switches itself on. The Streamlight PolyTac and SureFire G2X Pro rank high because CR123A lithium primaries hold their charge for around a decade. Rechargeable lights rank lower here despite better specifications, because a flat light is worth nothing.

A lantern beats a flashlight indoors

This is the single most useful thing on this page. A flashlight in a dark kitchen produces one bright circle and a room full of hard shadow. A 360-degree lantern at a quarter of the output makes the whole room usable.

Directional light is for finding things and for moving outdoors. Area light is for living in a room, which is what an outage actually requires. Flashlight versus lantern sets out the comparison properly.

Findability: the problem nobody plans for

Every household emergency plan has the same flaw. The torch is in a drawer, in a room you now have to cross in the dark, past the furniture that has moved since you last thought about it.

  • A socket light that switches itself on removes the problem entirely. This is why the Energizer Auto-On leads a page with no published output figure at all.
  • Glow-in-the-dark bodies let a light be found without another light. Cheap and genuinely effective.
  • One light per room beats one good light in the hall.
  • A headlamp beside the bed means both hands free from the moment you get up.

How much light a household actually needs

Building a household kit

  1. One socket light per floor, minimum. They switch themselves on and they cost very little.
  2. One lantern for the main living space. Area light is what makes an outage tolerable.
  3. One headlamp per adult. Hands free for the fuse box, the water stop-tap, or the stairs.
  4. One reliable handheld on lithium primaries. For going outside, checking the meter, or looking at anything at distance.
  5. One light per child, ideally glow-in-the-dark so they can find it. See flashlights for kids.
  6. Spare cells, stored separately, and a note of the date you bought them.

What we would not buy

A single expensive rechargeable light as your whole outage plan. It will be flat, and one directional light in a dark house is a much worse outcome than four cheap lights in the right places.

We would also avoid hand-crank lights as a primary. They work, and they produce very little light for a lot of effort. As a last-resort backup in a go-bag they are reasonable; as the thing you reach for when the lights go out they are miserable.

600 lumens, 8,700 candela, 1.5 hours, and two modes. The specification is modest; the point is that nothing on it can go wrong.

8,700 candela works out to a 186 m FL1 beam distance, which SureFire does not print. That is well short of the ProTac's 374 m on similar output, because SureFire deliberately builds a wider beam with more usable spill.

Two modes, low then high, with no strobe and no programming. On a light you might need in a hurry, that is a feature.

CR123A primaries hold their charge for a decade on a shelf. For a light that lives in a drawer against the worst night of your life, that matters more than rechargeability.

Three alkaline AAA cells hold roughly 3.9 Wh between them at a modest draw. That is comparable to the Swift LT's entire battery, for a couple of dollars, available in any gas station in the country.

The red mode is the feature people end up using most. It preserves night adaptation and does not wake a tent.

350 lumens looks modest next to a 3,000-lumen listing. On a footpath at walking pace it is more light than you need, and it will still be running when the 3,000-lumen light has stepped down twice.

What is the best flashlight for a power outage?

Not one light — a set. A socket light that switches itself on when mains power fails, a lantern for the living space, a headlamp per adult, and one handheld on lithium primaries. Coverage beats performance in an outage.

How long do flashlight batteries last in storage?

Lithium primaries about ten years. Alkalines five to ten, with a real risk of leaking and destroying the light. Sealed lithium-ion packs need a top-up every few months. For a drawer light, lithium primaries are the right answer.

Should emergency flashlights be rechargeable?

Generally no, for the primary ones. A rechargeable cell self-discharges and may be flat exactly when you need it. Keep rechargeables for lights you use and charge regularly, and put primaries in the ones that wait.

Is a lantern better than a flashlight for a power cut?
