Brightest is the most searched word in this category and the least useful one, and this page exists to show exactly why using nothing but the makers' own published figures. The brightest light here publishes 4,000 lumens and reaches 221 meters. The dimmest publishes 1,650 lumens and reaches 1,300 meters. Both numbers come from the companies that sell them.

So we have ranked this page by output, because that is what you came for, and put the distance column right beside it so the ranking argues with itself in public. If you only read one row, read the last one.

The criteria, before the list

Every light here had to clear three bars before it earned a place, and we applied them in this order:

  1. A published output figure from the maker. No estimates, no figures borrowed from a review site. Where a brand's own site would not serve us a spec page, we cite the brand's own retail listing and label it as such in the table.
  2. A published beam distance or candela figure. Without one there is no honest way to say what the output is doing, and a light that publishes only lumens cannot be ranked on this page at all.
  3. Currently purchasable. We checked every light here against its live retail listing before writing about it. We do not feature discontinued lights.

We have handled none of these lights. We own none of them and have no laboratory. Every figure below is the manufacturer's own, with the source linked and the date we read it — our methodology sets out what we do instead of testing, and why we think it is worth more than another set of unverifiable impressions.

Read the first and last data columns together. Sorted by lumens the list runs 4,000 down to 1,300. Sorted by reach it runs almost exactly backwards. The 4,000-lumen light sits last on distance; the 1,650-lumen light sits first, reaching nearly six times further on 41 percent of the output.

The number almost nobody publishes

There is a second problem with buying on brightness, and it is larger than the beam-shape one. No light in this list holds its peak output. High-power LEDs heat up within seconds and every one of these lights steps down to protect the emitter and the driver. The specification that tells you when, and to what, is runtime — and it is missing from most of this page.

Four of the seven brightest lights we cover publish no runtime at all, and a fifth publishes only a maximum. Two publish a figure for every mode, and both of them are Streamlights. On a page about peak output that is the most important table, because a 4,000-lumen burst with no published duration is a marketing number rather than a working specification.

The picks, and who each one is wrong for

Nitecore P20iX — the actual brightest, at 4,000 lumens

If the literal answer to the question is what you want, this is it: the highest published output of any handheld we cover. At 3 candela per lumen it is also the widest beam here, which means it fills a space brilliantly and reaches 221 m — less than any other light on the page. No runtime, weight or ingress rating is published. Skip it if you need distance, or if you need to know how long 4,000 lumens lasts.

Fenix PD36R Pro — the best balance of output and evidence

2,800 lumens, 380 m, and the only published cell capacity on the page at 5,000 mAh, which computes to 18 Wh. That combination makes it the light here we can say the most about. The gap is the runtime figure: 42 hours describes the lowest mode and Fenix does not publish what happens at full output. Skip it if you need a per-mode runtime table or a published ingress rating.

Olight Warrior X 4 — the one that is bright and reaches

2,600 lumens and 630 m is the best combination of the two on this page — 38 candela per lumen, roughly triple the concentration of the Fenix at nearly the same output. If you want one light that both fills a yard and identifies something at the end of it, this is the compromise. Olight publishes no runtime, weight or IP rating that we could source, and the magnetic charging is proprietary. Skip it if you want to run on cells bought locally.

Streamlight Stinger 2020 — the one that tells you everything

2,000 lumens, 315 m, IPX7, 350 g, and a runtime for every mode: 2 hours high, 4 medium, 24 low. It is the fourth brightest light here and the best documented. For duty use, where you need to know what the light does at hour three rather than second thirty, the published table is worth more than the 2,000 lumens it sits beside. Skip it if weight matters — at 350 g it is the heaviest here — or if you need a primary-cell fallback.

Nitecore P30i — 2,000 lumens and a kilometer

The same output as the Stinger and more than three times the reach: 1,000 m, working back to 250,000 candela. At 125 candela per lumen this is a specialist, and the spill around that hotspot will be thin for anything close. Nothing beyond output and distance is published. Skip it for close work, or if an unpublished runtime on a light you may depend on is a dealbreaker.

Acebeam L19 — the dimmest light here and the one that reaches furthest

1,650 lumens and 1,300 m, which computes to 422,500 candela and 256 candela per lumen — by a wide margin the most concentrated beam on this site. It is on a page about brightness precisely because it is the counter-example: the lowest output in the list, nearly six times the reach of the highest. Skip it if you want a general-purpose light. A beam this tight is close to useless indoors, and the 20A-rated 21700 it needs is a specific cell rather than any 21700.

Streamlight ProTac HL-X — the one we would actually carry

The lowest output here at 1,300 lumens, and the only light on the page that publishes candela directly rather than leaving us to derive it: 35,000 cd and 374 m, which reconcile exactly. Add IP68, a three-mode runtime table, 162 g, and the ability to run on two CR123A primaries when the pack is flat. Skip it if you genuinely need maximum output — six lights here are brighter.

How to buy on this page

What we would not tell you

We would not tell you any of these lights sustains its headline output, because none of them does and only two publish a figure that would let you find out. We would not tell you which is brightest in a real room, because we have not measured one and will not pretend to have.

And we would not tell you that the lumen number is meaningless. It is a real, standardized measurement of total light output under ANSI FL 1, and for filling a space it is the number that matters. It just is not the number that tells you how far you will see, which is what most people are actually asking when they search for the brightest flashlight.

Nitecore P20iX

221 m from 4,000 lumens works back to about 12,200 candela. That is a wide, bright beam rather than a thrower — the Streamlight ProTac HL-X puts nearly three times the intensity into its hotspot on a third of the output.

It is the clearest illustration on the site of why lumens do not decide reach. Four thousand lumens is a genuinely large number and this light still reaches barely half as far as a 1,300-lumen one.

4,000 lumens in a 21700 tube is a thermal burst. Without a published runtime table there is no way to know where it settles, which is what keeps it below the documented lights on our ranking.

Fenix PD36R Pro

2,800 lumens from a 21700 cell holding 18 watt-hours, at 169 grams. The biggest energy store in the tactical set.

A 5,000 mAh 21700 at 3.6 V is 18.0 watt-hours — nearly three times what the ProTac HL-X carries. That is the case for the 21700 format in one number.

380 m of reach on 2,800 lumens works back to about 36,100 candela, almost identical to the ProTac's 35,000 from 1,300 lumens. The Fenix is spending its extra output on spill, not on distance.

169 g including the cell is only 7 g more than a ProTac on CR123A, for nearly triple the energy. That is what four years of cell development buys.

Olight Warrior X 4

2,600 lumens and 630 m of stated throw. The longest published reach of any general-purpose light here.

630 m works back to about 99,200 candela. That is a genuine thrower: nearly three times the ProTac HL-X's intensity from twice the lumens, which means a much tighter hotspot.

The trade is spill. At that concentration you get a bright circle and very little else, which is superb across a field and awkward in a corridor.

No published runtime is a real gap on a light this bright. Sustained output is the question a 2,600-lumen thrower most needs to answer.

Two hours at 2,000 lumens is the standout number: that is a whole traffic stop at full output rather than the ninety-second burst most 2,000-lumen lights give you.

350 grams is heavy in the hand and irrelevant on a belt. This light is designed around a duty rig and a vehicle charger, and the mass buys the runtime.

315 m from 2,000 lumens implies about 24,800 candela — a broader beam than the ProTac's, which is the right call for searching a room rather than a treeline.

Nitecore P30i

2,000 lumens and 1,000 m of stated throw. The furthest-reaching light on the site, and a genuinely specialized one.

1,000 m implies 250,000 candela. That is seven times the ProTac HL-X's intensity from 1.5 times the lumens, and it is only achievable with a large, deep reflector.

A beam this tight is close to useless for anything within ten meters. It is a search-and-identify tool for open country.

21700 is the right cell for it — a beam this intense needs current, and an 18650 would sag.

1,650 lumens and 1,300 m of stated throw. The most efficient distance-per-lumen figure on the site, by a wide margin.

1,300 m implies roughly 422,500 candela. From 1,650 lumens that is an extraordinarily concentrated beam — this light puts a higher fraction of its output into the hotspot than anything else on the site.

It is the clearest possible demonstration of why lumens are the wrong metric for reach: this light reaches nearly twice as far as the Nitecore P30i on 82 percent of its output.

The 20A cell requirement is not a detail. A beam this intense draws hard, and a standard protected 21700 will trip its own protection circuit.

35,000 candela and 374 m reconcile exactly: the square root of 35,000 divided by 0.25 is 374.2 m. Streamlight's numbers are internally consistent across all three modes, which is the strongest signal of a maker publishing real measurements rather than marketing figures.

1.5 hours at 1,300 lumens implies roughly 6 to 7 watt-hours of usable energy — consistent with a single 18650-class pack and with the CR123A alternative.

IP68 with 2 m impact resistance is the toughest rating in this roundup, and the reason this light shows up on so many duty belts.

What is the brightest tactical flashlight?

Of the lights we cover, the Nitecore P20iX at 4,000 published lumens. It also has the shortest beam distance on this page at 221 m, because its beam is very wide — 3 candela per lumen. If you want distance rather than total output, the Acebeam L19 reaches 1,300 m on 1,650 lumens.

Why does a 1,650-lumen flashlight reach further than a 4,000-lumen one?

Because reach depends on beam intensity, not total output. The Acebeam L19 publishes 1,300 m, which works back to 422,500 candela — 256 candela per lumen. The Nitecore P20iX publishes 221 m, or 12,210 candela, which is 3 candela per lumen. The L19 concentrates its light into a narrow column while the P20iX spreads it wide.

How long can a flashlight run at 4,000 lumens?

Nitecore does not publish a runtime for the P20iX, so we cannot tell you and will not estimate. What is certain is that it is not sustained — every high-output LED steps down within minutes as it heats. Only two lights on this page, both Streamlights, publish a runtime for every mode.

Is more lumens always better?

No, and this page is the clearest demonstration we can build from published figures. Lumens measure total light output, which matters for filling a room or a yard. Candela measures intensity, which is what determines how far you see. Ranked by lumens this list runs one way; ranked by reach it runs almost exactly backwards.

Which of these is best for police or duty use?

The Streamlight ProTac HL-X or the Stinger 2020, neither of which is the brightest here. Both publish a runtime for every mode, an ingress rating and a weight, and the ProTac also runs on CR123A primaries when its pack is flat. For a light you may depend on, published behavior beats peak output.

Do any of these run on regular batteries?

Only the Streamlight ProTac HL-X, which takes two CR123A lithium primaries as an alternative to its rechargeable pack. The rest are rechargeable — mostly 21700 cells with USB-C, and the Olight uses proprietary magnetic charging. CR123A primaries store for around a decade, which is why the option matters on a light kept for emergencies.

What does candela per lumen mean?

It is not a specification anyone publishes — we compute it by dividing peak beam intensity by total output. It describes how tightly the reflector concentrates the light. On this page it ranges from 3 to 256. Low numbers mean a wide flood for close work; high numbers mean a narrow beam for distance.
