Mini Maglite LED 2-Cell AA review

We have not tested this flashlight. We own none of the products on this site and have no laboratory. This review works from Maglite's own product page, re-read on September 27, 2026, and the arithmetic those figures allow.

On output this is the least impressive light on the site: 127 lumens, against 4,000 for the brightest thing we cover. It still reaches a published 156 meters, which is further than the 500-lumen Streamlight MacroStream manages on four times the output. Both of those sentences are true because reach is not made of lumens, and this light is the clearest demonstration of that we have found.

What Maglite publishes

Output, intensity, distance, runtime for two modes, the mode list, weight, length, two durability ratings and a warranty term. Only Streamlight matches that among the other eight brands we cover — and Maglite is routinely dismissed as a legacy brand, which on disclosure it plainly is not.

The two figures check each other

Forty-eight candela per lumen

That ratio is the entire product. It comes from the adjustable-focus reflector Maglite has built its range around for forty years: twist the head and the beam goes from a wide flood to a tight spot. A fixed reflector at this size cannot do both, and nothing else in our EDC set is adjustable at all.

The consequence is counter-intuitive and worth stating plainly. This light gets 156 meters out of 127 lumens; the Nitecore MT2A Pro needs 1,000 lumens for 255 m and the ThruNite TC15 V3 needs 2,403 for 223 m. Per lumen spent, nothing pocketable we cover comes close — and it beats the 500-lumen MacroStream on absolute reach as well. AA cells are the other half of the argument

Two AA alkalines, included. Between them they hold roughly 3.9 watt-hours at a modest draw — more than the 3.27 Wh sealed cell in a Petzl Swift LT, for the price of a packet, available in any shop in any town.

That matters more for this light than for most, because the 11-hour high and 25-hour low mean a set of cells lasts a long time in occasional use, and when they do run out you open a packet rather than find a socket. For a glovebox, a toolbox or a kitchen drawer that is the right arrangement. AA flashlights covers the format.

The honest caveat: alkaline cells leak when left flat for long periods, and they lose a substantial fraction of their capacity in the cold. Lithium AA primaries fix both at a higher price, and Maglite does not publish figures for them.

The four-mode switch is the real flaw

Maglite publishes four selectable modes: High, Low, Blink and SOS — and that is a genuine problem on a light this simple in every other respect.

Two of the four are signalling modes almost nobody uses, and on a light with a single control you pass through them. Reaching for a flashlight in the dark and getting a strobe is unpleasant; handing this light to somebody unfamiliar with it and having them land on Blink is worse. It is the one specification here that counts clearly against the light, and it is why our flashlights for elderly people page ranks it below simpler options despite the strong sheet.

What it costs you

• 127 lumens. Genuinely dim, and the focused beam makes it feel dimmer up close. This is a light for seeing something at distance, not for lighting a room.
• A four-mode switch with Blink and SOS in the cycle.
• IPX4. Splash resistance, not immersion, with no dust digit. The Acebeam Pokelit AA publishes IP68 at a similar price.
• 1 m drop resistance, the lowest tier anyone here publishes, against 3 m on the Streamlight PolyTac.
• 167.8 mm long — longer than the brighter, 600-lumen PolyTac, because the reflector depth that buys the reach needs the body length.
• No high-CRI option. For color accuracy see high-CRI flashlights.

Who should buy something else

Skip it if you want to light an area. 127 lumens through a focused reflector is the wrong tool for a room, a campsite or a work surface. The Streamlight MacroStream publishes 500 lumens at 4 candela per lumen, which is the opposite beam and the better one indoors.

Skip it if a mode cycle with Blink in it will annoy you. It will.

Skip it if it will get wet or dusty. IPX4 with no dust digit is the weakest rating on this page, and the Acebeam Pokelit AA publishes IP68 on the same cell format.

Skip it if you want output per dollar. Almost everything else we cover gives you more lumens for the money. What almost nothing gives you is 48 candela per lumen in a pocket.

The verdict, stated as what it commits to

Maglite commits to 127 lumens, 6,093 candela, 156 meters, 11 hours on high and 25 on low, 117.75 g, 167.8 mm, IPX4, 1 m drop resistance and a ten-year warranty, on two AA cells you can buy anywhere — with the candela and distance figures reconciling exactly.

Buy it to put a tight beam on something a long way off, from a light that will still work after two years in a drawer. Do not buy it to be bright.
