Runtime is the specification people care about second and check last, and it is the one most often quoted in a way that is true and useless at the same time. A light advertised at 42 hours does not run for 42 hours at the output you bought it for. It runs for 42 hours at its lowest setting, which on most of these lights is dim enough to read by and not much else.
This page ranks EDC lights on runtime the maker publishes, states which mode each figure describes, and names the five lights where no runtime figure exists at all. That last group is larger than it should be.
How we picked
- Pocketable. Everything here is a light you would actually carry daily. The largest is 169 g; most are well under half that.
- A published runtime, or an honest gap. Lights that publish a runtime are ranked on it. Lights that do not are included where they earn a place another way, and the gap is stated in the table rather than filled in.
- Currently purchasable. Each light was checked against its live retail listing before we wrote about it.
We have not tested any of these lights, do not own them, and have no laboratory. Every figure is the maker's own with the source linked — see our methodology for what we do instead and where we think it is stronger than an untraceable impression.

Three of these eight lights publish a runtime for every mode. Two publish a single figure. Three publish nothing. All three of the per-mode tables belong to the same company, which is a pattern worth noticing when you are deciding whose numbers to trust.
The arithmetic, where the inputs exist
Runtime is not magic — it is stored energy divided by draw. When a maker publishes cell capacity you can check the claim yourself, and on this page exactly one maker does.
For the AA and AAA lights the arithmetic has to be looser, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. A AA cell holds roughly two to three watt-hours and a AAA around one to one and a half, but the usable figure depends on the chemistry, the brand and how hard the light draws — an alkaline cell delivers considerably less under a heavy load than its rating suggests. That is why we rank these lights on published hours where they exist and leave the estimate out where they do not.
The picks, and who each one is wrong for
Fenix PD36R Pro — the longest published runtime here
42 hours, and the only light on the page whose maker publishes the cell capacity that makes the figure checkable: 5,000 mAh at 21700, or 18 Wh. It is also the brightest thing here at 2,800 lumens and reaches 380 m. The catch is size — at 169 g it is the largest light on this page, which for many people puts it at the edge of what EDC means. Skip it if you want a per-mode runtime table, a published ingress rating, or something that disappears in a pocket.
Streamlight PolyTac — the longest runtime you can actually check
34 hours on low, 5.5 medium, 2.75 high, on two CR123A primaries, at 119 g with IPX7 and 214 m of reach. It is second on the headline number and first on usefulness, because every mode is published and you can plan around it. CR123A cells store for roughly a decade, so this is also the light on the page most likely to work after two years in a drawer. Skip it if you want rechargeable — there is no USB port here, and replacement primaries cost more than topping up a battery.
Maglite Mini LED 2-Cell AA — 25 hours from cells you already own
127 lumens, 6,093 candela and 156 m of reach on two AA cells, with 25 hours published on Low. The output is the lowest here by a wide margin and the reach is longer than every light on this page except the Fenix — 48 candela per lumen, which is what an adjustable-focus reflector does. Skip it if you want brightness or USB-C. Buy it if you want a light that runs on cells from any shop in any town, which is a real advantage the lumen column will not show you.
Streamlight ProTac HL-X — the flexible one
25 hours on low, 3.75 medium, 1.5 high, and the only light here that runs on either a rechargeable pack or two CR123A primaries. Add IP68 — the strongest ingress rating on this page — 35,000 published candela, 374 m and 162 g. If you want one light that works on a charger at home and on primaries in a blackout, this is it. Skip it if 162 g is too much for daily pocket carry, or if you want the cell capacity published.
Streamlight MacroStream — the best documented small light
2 hours high and 8 low, 500 lumens, 2,000 candela, 90 m, 62.4 g and IPX4. Its runtime is the shortest of the five lights that publish one, and it is on this page because it publishes more about itself than anything else this size: output, intensity, distance, both runtimes, weight and an ingress rating. At 4 candela per lumen it is a pure flood, which at arm's length is the right shape. Skip it if you need more than 8 hours, or if IPX4 — splashes only — is not enough.
ThruNite Archer 2A V3 — two AA cells and IPX8
500 lumens on two AA cells with an IPX8 rating, which is the strongest waterproofing of any AA light we cover. ThruNite publishes no runtime figure that we could source, which on a page ranked by runtime has to count against it. It is here because the combination of AA power and IPX8 is genuinely rare. Skip it if you need a published runtime before you buy.
Acebeam Pokelit AA — the high-CRI option
550 lumens from a single AA, with CRI 90+ and IP68 — one of only two lights on this site whose maker publishes a color rendering figure. High CRI means colors look like themselves, which matters more than people expect when you are identifying a wire, a fluid or a stain. No runtime published. Skip it if runtime is the deciding factor; take it if color accuracy is, and see high-CRI EDC flashlights.
Olight i3T 2 EOS — the smallest thing here
200 lumens and 62 m of reach from a single AAA, with IPX8. This is the keychain end of the category, where a cell holds perhaps one and a half watt-hours and no driver cleverness changes that. Olight publishes no runtime. It is here because a AAA light you actually carry beats a 42-hour light sitting at home. How to buy on this page

- You want a runtime you can plan a night around — Streamlight PolyTac. Every mode published, 34 hours at the bottom.

What we would not tell you
We would not tell you how long the ThruNite, the Acebeam or the Olight run, because none of their makers publishes it and an estimate copied from a forum is not evidence. Three of the eight best long-running EDC lights we could assemble publish no runtime at all, and naming that gap is more useful than papering over it.
We would also not tell you that the light at the top of this table is the one to buy. The Fenix wins on the headline and publishes the least about what happens in between. A 34-hour figure with two other modes published beside it is a better specification than a 42-hour figure standing alone.

Fenix PD36R Pro

A 5,000 mAh 21700 at 3.6 V is 18.0 watt-hours — nearly three times what the ProTac HL-X carries. That is the case for the 21700 format in one number.
380 m of reach on 2,800 lumens works back to about 36,100 candela, almost identical to the ProTac's 35,000 from 1,300 lumens. The Fenix is spending its extra output on spill, not on distance.
169 g including the cell is only 7 g more than a ProTac on CR123A, for nearly triple the energy. That is what four years of cell development buys.

Streamlight PolyTac
600 lumens, 214 m, 2.75 hours, IPX7 and 3 m impact resistance in a nylon polymer body. The one you leave in a truck.
2.75 hours at 600 lumens from two CR123A cells is a very efficient result — that is roughly 6 watt-hours doing real work rather than being thrown away as heat.
3 m of impact resistance is the highest figure in this roundup. Polymer absorbs a drop that would dent an aluminum body.
119 g with cells installed makes this the lightest full-size duty light here.

127 lumens that reach 156 meters. A Streamlight MacroStream puts out four times the output and reaches 90.
This is the clearest single illustration on the site of why lumens do not decide reach. 127 lumens, 6,093 candela, 156 m. The Streamlight MacroStream is 500 lumens, 2,000 candela, 90 m. Four times the output, and it reaches 66 m less, because its reflector spreads the light instead of collimating it.
Forty-eight candela per lumen from a AA light is remarkable, and it is entirely down to the focusing head. Twist it and the beam goes from a usable flood to a tight circle you can put on something across a field.
What you give up is everything else. 127 lumens is genuinely dim next to any modern pocket light, there is no USB-C, and IPX4 is a rain rating.

35,000 candela and 374 m reconcile exactly: the square root of 35,000 divided by 0.25 is 374.2 m. Streamlight's numbers are internally consistent across all three modes, which is the strongest signal of a maker publishing real measurements rather than marketing figures.
1.5 hours at 1,300 lumens implies roughly 6 to 7 watt-hours of usable energy — consistent with a single 18650-class pack and with the CR123A alternative.
IP68 with 2 m impact resistance is the toughest rating in this roundup, and the reason this light shows up on so many duty belts.

2,000 candela and 90 m are consistent with each other, which is a better sign than it sounds. The FL1 beam distance is the square root of candela divided by 0.25 lux: the square root of 2,000 over 0.25 is 89.4 m. Streamlight's published figures check out to within a meter.
Two hours on high for 500 lumens implies roughly 2.5 watt-hours of usable energy, which is about right for a light this size. Nothing here is being oversold.
62 grams is pocketable in a way that a 21700 light is not, and that is the trade you are making against a bigger cell.

Two alkaline AA cells hold roughly 3.9 Wh, which is more than most single-16340 rechargeables and costs a dollar to replace.
A dual switch — one for on, one for mode — is the interface people actually want. Single-switch lights make you cycle through modes to turn off.
IPX8 is stated on the listing. We could not reach a ThruNite spec page from this build, so the rest of the table stays empty.

Acebeam Pokelit AA (high CRI)
550 lumens at a stated 90-plus CRI, IP68, on a single AA. The combination of color accuracy and a standard cell is rare.
IP68 on a AA pocket light is the specification that justifies the price over a supermarket torch. Dust tight and immersion rated is a different class of object.
A single alkaline AA holds about 1.9 Wh. That is a long run at 50 lumens and a short one at 550; the 14500 lithium option roughly doubles the usable power at the cost of storage life.
CRI above 90 in a AA body is unusual. Most makers reserve the good phosphor for the 18650 lights.

Olight i3T 2 EOS
200 lumens, 62 m of stated throw, IPX8, on a single AAA cell. The one to buy if you want no charging routine at all.
62 m from 200 lumens implies roughly 960 candela, working backward through the FL1 definition. That is a tight little beam for the output, which is what you want on a light this small.
IPX8 on a AAA twist light is unusual and worth the money on its own.
One alkaline AAA is about 1.3 Wh. At a modest 30 lumens that is a genuinely long night; at 200 lumens it is minutes.

Which EDC flashlight has the longest runtime?
Of the lights we cover, the Fenix PD36R Pro at a published 42 hours. That figure describes its lowest mode, not the 2,800 lumens on the box. The Streamlight PolyTac publishes 34 hours on low and, unlike the Fenix, also publishes figures for medium and high, which makes it the more useful number.
How is flashlight runtime measured?
Under ANSI/PLATO FL 1, runtime is measured from 30 seconds after switch-on until output falls to 10 percent of that value. That last part matters: a light can be at 11 percent of its starting brightness and still be inside its published runtime.
Why do some flashlights not publish a runtime?

How do I calculate flashlight runtime myself?
Watt-hours equals milliamp-hours divided by 1000, times the nominal cell voltage. Divide the result by the light's power draw for hours. The Fenix PD36R Pro's 5,000 mAh 21700 at 3.6 V is 18 Wh; at a 0.43 W draw that is 42 hours, which matches the published claim.
Does a longer runtime mean a dimmer flashlight?
At the same cell capacity, yes — runtime and output trade directly against each other. That is why every long runtime figure on this page belongs to a low mode. The Maglite Mini's 25 hours comes at 127 lumens; the Streamlight ProTac's 25 hours comes at its lowest setting rather than its 1,300.
What is the best EDC flashlight for a power outage?
The Streamlight PolyTac or the Maglite Mini, because both run on primary cells that survive long storage. A rechargeable light that has been in a drawer for a year may be flat when you need it, which is the one failure mode a runtime figure never captures.
