It is worth saying at the start that both companies sit near the top of the disclosure ranking on this site. Neither hides behind a single lumen number the way several brands we cover do. The gap between them is narrow and specific, and it lands in exactly one place: what happens to the light after the first two minutes.

How we picked

Three matched pairs by role and size — the rechargeable flagships, the duty handhelds, and the pocket lights. Every figure is the maker's own, linked with the date we read it. We have handled none of these lights and do not claim to have; our methodology sets out what we do instead of testing.

Output, reach, and the column neither brand prints

Candela per lumen is not a published specification. Divide peak beam intensity by total output and you get a single number describing how tightly the reflector concentrates what the emitter makes. It is the fastest way to see what a light is actually for, and it is the column that makes this comparison legible.

Two things fall out of that table immediately. The first is that the Fenix PD36R Pro and the Streamlight ProTac HL-X reach within six meters of each other — 380 m against 374 m — while the Fenix publishes more than twice the output. The second is that two of the three Fenix lights here publish no beam figure at all, which means there is no honest way to put them in the reach column.

The disclosure gap, stated precisely

Both brands publish output. Both publish beam distance on their flagships. The difference is in the runtime column, and it is not a small one.

Read the two halves of that table against each other. Streamlight publishes a runtime for every mode on every light here. Fenix publishes one number, for the mode you will almost never select. The PD36R Pro's 42 hours is real, and it describes the light running at an output low enough to read a map by. What the PD36R Pro does at 2,800 lumens is not a figure Fenix puts on the page, which means nobody outside the company knows it.

Where the energy actually comes from

Fenix publishes cell capacity, which Streamlight mostly does not, and that is the one column where the disclosure runs the other way.

Durability, and what happens when the cell is flat

Streamlight publishes an ingress rating on every light in this comparison. Fenix publishes one on its headlamps but not on the handhelds we read, so the column is thin on one side through no fault of the arithmetic.

  • Streamlight ProTac HL-X — IP68, dust tight and waterproof to 2 m. The strongest ingress figure in this comparison.
  • Streamlight Stinger 2020 — IPX7, immersion to 1 m for 30 minutes, at 350 g.
  • Streamlight PolyTac — IPX7, and at 119 g the lightest full-size light here.
  • Streamlight MacroStream — IPX4, splashing water only. The weakest here, and worth knowing given it is the pocket light.
  • Fenix PD36R Pro, PD35 V3.0, E18R V2.0 — no ingress rating in the pages we read. We will not print one we cannot source.

The dead-battery question splits the other way. Two of the four Streamlights take CR123A primaries, which you can buy at a gas station and store for a decade. The ProTac HL-X runs on either its pack or two CR123As, which is the most flexible power arrangement in this comparison. The Fenix lights here are rechargeable in practice, with the PD36R Pro's 21700 being a cell you can carry a spare of but not one you will find on a shelf in a small town.

Flagship: Fenix PD36R Pro vs Streamlight ProTac HL-X

The closest and most interesting pair on the page. The Fenix publishes 2,800 lumens against 1,300, and 380 m against 374 m — more than double the output for six extra meters of reach. That difference is entirely beam shape: the Streamlight concentrates 27 candela per lumen, the Fenix 13. The ProTac puts a tight hotspot inside substantial usable spill; the Fenix throws a broader, brighter wall of light.

Take the Fenix if you want the most light and the most stored energy, and you are content with a single runtime figure. Take the Streamlight if you need to know what the light does at every level, want IP68, or want a light that keeps working on primaries when the pack is flat.

Duty: Streamlight Stinger 2020 vs Fenix PD35 V3.0

Not a fair fight on disclosure. The Stinger 2020 publishes 2,000 lumens, 315 m, a three-mode runtime table, IPX7 and a weight. The PD35 V3.0 publishes 1,700 lumens and an 18650 cell, and that is where our sourcing ends — no beam distance, no runtime, no ingress rating, no weight. On specifications this is the most one-sided pair in the comparison, and the Streamlight wins it by default rather than by margin.

Pocket: Streamlight MacroStream vs Fenix E18R V2.0

The Fenix publishes 1,200 lumens against 500, and nothing else. The Streamlight publishes 500 lumens, 2,000 candela, 90 m, two runtimes, 62.4 g and IPX4 — the most completely documented small light on this site. If you want the brightest thing in your pocket, the E18R. If you want to know what is in your pocket, the MacroStream. At 4 candela per lumen the Streamlight is a pure flood, which for a light used at arm's length is the right shape.

  • You need to plan around runtime — Streamlight, without qualification. Every light publishes every mode.

What we would not do

We would not read Fenix's missing ingress ratings as meaning its lights are fragile. Fenix publishes IP68 on the HM65R-T headlamp, so the company clearly runs the tests; the handheld pages we read simply do not carry the figure. Absence of a published number is a disclosure fact, not a durability fact, and those two things are worth keeping apart.

We would also not buy the PD36R Pro expecting 2,800 lumens for 42 hours. Those two numbers describe opposite ends of the light's range and cannot both be true at once. That is not a Fenix problem specifically — it is what a single headline runtime figure always means, on any brand.

A 5,000 mAh 21700 at 3.6 V is 18.0 watt-hours — nearly three times what the ProTac HL-X carries. That is the case for the 21700 format in one number.

380 m of reach on 2,800 lumens works back to about 36,100 candela, almost identical to the ProTac's 35,000 from 1,300 lumens. The Fenix is spending its extra output on spill, not on distance.

169 g including the cell is only 7 g more than a ProTac on CR123A, for nearly triple the energy. That is what four years of cell development buys.

35,000 candela and 374 m reconcile exactly: the square root of 35,000 divided by 0.25 is 374.2 m. Streamlight's numbers are internally consistent across all three modes, which is the strongest signal of a maker publishing real measurements rather than marketing figures.

1.5 hours at 1,300 lumens implies roughly 6 to 7 watt-hours of usable energy — consistent with a single 18650-class pack and with the CR123A alternative.

IP68 with 2 m impact resistance is the toughest rating in this roundup, and the reason this light shows up on so many duty belts.

Two hours at 2,000 lumens is the standout number: that is a whole traffic stop at full output rather than the ninety-second burst most 2,000-lumen lights give you.

350 grams is heavy in the hand and irrelevant on a belt. This light is designed around a duty rig and a vehicle charger, and the mass buys the runtime.

315 m from 2,000 lumens implies about 24,800 candela — a broader beam than the ProTac's, which is the right call for searching a room rather than a treeline.

Fenix PD35 V3.0

1,700 lumens in the size that made the PD35 the default mid-size tactical light for a decade.

The PD35 is the size most people actually want in a tactical light: long enough for a cigar grip, short enough for a pocket.

18650 rather than 21700 keeps the diameter down at the cost of about a third of the energy a PD36R Pro carries.

Fenix's own site did not carry a page for this version when we looked, so the table is limited to what the brand's listing states.

Streamlight MacroStream USB

500 lumens, 2,000 candela, 90 m and two hours on high — every figure published per mode by the maker. That is the reason it leads.

2,000 candela and 90 m are consistent with each other, which is a better sign than it sounds. The FL1 beam distance is the square root of candela divided by 0.25 lux: the square root of 2,000 over 0.25 is 89.4 m. Streamlight's published figures check out to within a meter.

Two hours on high for 500 lumens implies roughly 2.5 watt-hours of usable energy, which is about right for a light this size. Nothing here is being oversold.

62 grams is pocketable in a way that a 21700 light is not, and that is the trade you are making against a bigger cell.

1,200 lumens from a light barely longer than its own cell, USB-C rechargeable, with a proper tail switch.

A 16340 holds about 2.9 watt-hours. At 1,200 lumens that is a few minutes before the driver steps it down, which is normal and worth understanding before you buy on the headline.

The tail switch is what separates this from the twist-and-hope keychain class: momentary on with your thumb, without changing your grip.

Very short overall length makes it disappear in a coin pocket, which is the real reason people carry it.

Is Streamlight or Fenix better?

Fenix publishes higher output on every matched pair and the largest battery here at 18 Wh. Streamlight publishes a runtime for every mode, an ingress rating on every light, and candela on its flagship. If you buy on the headline, Fenix. If you buy on the spec sheet, Streamlight.

Why does a 2,800-lumen Fenix reach barely further than a 1,300-lumen Streamlight?

Because reach depends on candela, not lumens. The Fenix PD36R Pro publishes 380 m, which works back to 36,100 candela. The Streamlight ProTac HL-X publishes 35,000 candela and 374 m. The Streamlight concentrates 27 candela per lumen against the Fenix's 13, so it converts far less output into nearly the same distance.

Are Fenix flashlights waterproof?

Fenix publishes IP68 on the HM65R-T headlamp, but none of the three Fenix handhelds in this comparison carried an ingress rating in the pages we read, so we do not state one. Streamlight publishes IP68 on the ProTac HL-X and IPX7 on the Stinger 2020 and the PolyTac.

How long does the Fenix PD36R Pro run at full output?

Fenix does not publish it. The stated 42 hours is a maximum, which describes the lowest mode. We will not estimate the figure at 2,800 lumens. Streamlight publishes a runtime for every mode on all four of its lights here, which is the cleanest illustration of the difference between the two brands.

Which brand publishes better specifications?

Streamlight, on the strength of the per-mode runtime table and universal ingress ratings. Fenix publishes better battery information — it is the only one of the two that states cell capacity, which is what makes the watt-hour arithmetic possible. Both sit near the top of the nine brands we cover.

Can you use regular batteries in these?

The Streamlight ProTac HL-X takes two CR123A lithium primaries as an alternative to its pack, and the PolyTac runs on CR123A only. That matters when a charger is not available. The Fenix lights here are rechargeable in practice, though the PD36R Pro's 21700 cell can be swapped for a charged spare.
